Welcome to
Brimscombe & Thrupp Community Compost

Hello! This is BATCOM

We are a group of people who love to make compost. Organic growers, wheelbarrow-pushers, worm nerds, call us what you will. We have fun taking the ‘green waste’ from our gardens and allotments and using it to feed our soil, right here.

We don’t think that tonnes of green waste should have to travel for miles to recycling centres, or be turned into smoke and ash on people’s bonfires. And we don’t think people should have to go shopping to buy commercial compost when they can make a better product themselves, right here. So we got together, and invented BATCOM.

There’s nothing new about community composting – us humans have
been recycling our unwanted organic waste for many thousands of years. Earliest written accounts date back over 4,000 years to southwestern Asia, and evidence from the Neolithic period has been found closer to home in Scotland.

Compost is a nutrient-rich humous made through the aerobic
biological decomposition of organic materials. It’s added to soil as a conditioner, making the ground more fertile and full of microbial life, feeding plants and supporting their healthy growth.

Some of the valuable ways community composting works for us today includes reducing our carbon footprint by eliminating the need to transport waste; cutting the amount of waste going to landfill; and reducing methane emissions which would be otherwise produced by commercial composting practices.

Additionally and just as importantly, it helps people connect, keep fit and have a laugh together.
